Our mission at Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham is to provide pro bono legal services to the low-income and underserved residents of Jefferson County with the goal of enhancing free access to justice. We believe that everyone in the community at large has the potential to make a meaningful impact. Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham is focused on providing pro bono legal services in the areas of Eviction Defense, Habitability Issues, Garnishment Defense, Consumer Matters, Small Estate Probate Questions, Bankruptcy , IDs and Drivers’ License Restoration for those experiencing homelessness. Our Wills Clinics focus on helping our client population protect what is normally their only family wealth – their home. Our Expungement Clinics seek to help our clients with a second chance at life via employment, educational and housing opportunities.

The effectiveness of our pro bono services is highlighted by our many positive client stories such as:

  • Client A was assisted with an Eviction matter by one of our volunteer attorneys. He
negotiated a compassionate resolution to the matter and physically assisted the client with their move.
  • Client B attended one of our Expungement Clinics and was so overcome with gratitude that she asked if she could transfer her tithes to VLB because of the meaningful service that we are providing to the community.
  • Client C, a single mother with four children, was able to secure an expungement. She stated that it was life changing and she could now pursue her dream of attending nursing school.
  • Client D, a single mother of three, came to our most recent Expungement Clinic. While completing her affidavit of substantial hardship she looked at her account and discovered that she was being garnished. The garnishment amount was far more than the allowed 25%. We were able to file claim of exemption for her.
